Social Impact:As an agricultural export company based in Kenya, AAA Growers (AAA) has found many channels through which it can institute sustainable practices. From the employment of a 2000 member workforce to its insistence on sustainable production and appropriate care of farmland to its focus on the export of fresh, quality vegetables, the company has displayed concern for its staff, land, and consumers. With a workforce spread across its farms and pack houses, AAA has been able to employ large numbers of local staff across the communities within which it works. In addition, approximately 70% of its staff is women. Sustainability of its farmland has also remained important as the company engages in intense crop rotation, diversification, and compositing of waste to keep the land healthy and productive. Finally, the vegetables that make their way to the European and South African markets are harvested, packed, and delivered within 24-48 hours.

AAA Growers: Farming for a Better Future
AAA Growers was established as a Kenyan-based premium and convenience vegetable export company in 2000. With funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Founder Ariff Shamji began a "microfinance-oriented" project growing tomatoes and french beans for local markets in 1999. Shamji soon recognized opportunity within the export market and with further funding from the IFC, established AAA to distribute fresh, quality vegetables to the UK and continental Europe. Since the company's inception, AAA has increased its farmland to 250 hectares, which produces a large variety of vegetables including tenderstem, chillies, legumes, corn, peppers, and herbs, among others.
It now exports to the UK, continental Europe, and South Africa and has a sales volume of approximately USD 21M as of early 2010. The company has three farms in different regions and at various attitudes to ensure crop diversification and sustainable production of vegetables year-round. Each farm has efficient irrigation and spray and agrochemical facilities. AAA also has four pack houses located at its farm sites, each of which are equipped with green houses and drip irrigation. Three of its pack houses are used to prepare the company's premium vegetable lines, while the fourth is used for its prepared convenience products such as its ready-to-eat lines.
AAA has employed specialized teams within its pack houses and across its sites to ensure that its vegetables are harvested, packed, and exported within 24-28 hours. All of its products are cut fresh daily and processed by hand. The company currently harvests approximately 30 metric tonnes of vegetables per day and exports over 4,000 metric tonnes of fresh vegetables annually. The five metric tonnes of waste produced daily from the processing and packaging of vegetables is composted on site and used as an organic fertilizer on its farms.
