Cracking the Conundrum

An emerging group of investors, globally and in India, are looking beyond the customary financial returns, and integrating Environmental and Social (E&S) information in their investment decision making. The advent of these investors and their needs have been manifested in an increasing demand for greater disclosure and reporting of E&S information by businesses in India. However, E&S information currently is both limited and scattered. This background predicates the question: Can such investors, which are using E&S information and targeting India, find a standardized and reliable means to get this information and make investment decisions more effectively? A Portfolio Approach to Impact Investment: A Practical Guide to Building, Analyzing and Managing a Portfolio of Impact Investments

J.P. Morgan Social Finance produces thought leadership and analytical research on the impact investment market, in addition to their principal investment and client advisory capabilities. To date, they have published a flagship market landscape and sizing study as well as a more in-depth analysis of over 2,000 private transactions – the largest data set in the market. Building off of that work, this new research presents a portfolio management tool to analyze impact investments across the three dimensions that determine the performance of these assets: impact, return and risk. Using their own portfolio and drawing from the experiences of over twenty leading impact investors, they have created a graphical framework to set targets, map investments and aggregate the profile of an impact investment portfolio as a whole. The work responds to an increasing demand for portfolio management strategies from both new and experienced impact asset managers, as market opportunities and portfolios grow. Read more »

Energy and Power

Does energy access help women? Beyond anecdotes: a review of the evidence

Nearly one fifth of humanity do not have access to electricity, and more than double this number still rely on the use of biomass for cooking. Experience suggests that when a household or a whole community gains access to modern energy, defined here as electricity and improved cookstoves (see Appendix), there are many benefits to the economy and to people’s quality of life. However because of the different roles that are assigned to men and women, any major change in living situation such as energy access has the potential to affect men and women differently. While there are many anecdotes suggesting that gaining access to modern energy brings specific benefits to women, rigorous impact evaluation studies are harder to find. This paper reviews the evidence from available studies on how gaining access to electricity and clean cooking impacts women and girls. Read more »
